  2.     When put to a direct test, 
  3. however, the claim that the 
  4. Poggendorff effect is based on 
  5. the overestimation of acute 
  6. angles is found wanting. In the 
  7. illustration to the left, the 
  8. Poggendorff pattern is modified 
  9. in two ways: In A, the acute 
  10. angles are eliminated; in B, the 
  11. obtuse angles are eliminated. As 
  12. can be seen, the former 
  13. continues to yield the illusion 
  14. whereas the latter does not. 
  15. Therefore, if misperception of 
  16. angle accounts for the illusion, 
  17. it must be argued that the effect 
  18. occurs because obtuse angles 
  19. are underestimated, not 
  20. because acute angles are 
  21. overestimated. However, this 
  22. conclusion is not consonant 
  23. with Blakemore et al.ΓÇÖs 
  24. findings, nor does it follow 
  25. from the lateral-inhibition 
  26. theory.
